Acoustic Strawbs

Sunday, September 19th at 7:00 P.M. (please note special evening concert)

Acoustic Strawbs

A unique opportunity to see this legendary group in an intimate listening room environment.

The nucleus of Strawbs are David Cousins, Dave Lambert, and Chas Cronk, the front-line of the classic 1970's line-up of Britain's most successful international folk-rock band. "Lay Down," "Benedictus," "Down By The Sea," "Shine on Silver Moon," and "Part of the Union" are just some of the well-known songs from this group whose mid-seventies albums like Grave New World, Bursting at The Seams, Ghosts and Hero and Heroine helped define folk rock.

The Chicago Tribune heralds them by noting "the Acoustic Strawbs stand out as a band that performs their old material with passion and precision. Furthermore, they have broken new ground by harnessing the power of their electric incarnation in an acoustic setting." (www.strawbsweb.co.uk for information)

Advance sale at $30.00 at www.shopsbu.com until Wednesday, September 15th.

Beaucoup Blue

A Blues co-bill with Beaucoup Blue and Toby Walker
Sunday, October 3rd at 2:00 P.M.

A Blues co-bill of Beaucoup Blue and Toby Walker

Beaucoup Blue is the father and son Philadelphia-based duo of David and Adrian Mowry. Although blues is a staple in their repertoire, they also cite musical influences from Folk, Soul, R&B, Jazz, Country, and Bluegrass. A handsome range of instruments (six and twelve string guitars, slide guitar, dobro) and the two soulful voices blend together like only family members can. (www.beaucoupblue.com for information.)

Toby Walker has emerged on the national music scene as a unique, accomplished fingerstyle guitar virtuoso, having honed his skills on Long Island for several years. Toby is adept at blues, rags, hot country picking, and coaxes more out of a guitar than anyone can image. He is also a skilled singer and songwriter who draws inspiration from traditional and contemporary music. (www.littletobywalker.com for information)

Eric Andersen

Eric Andersen
Special Stony Brook Homecoming Weekend concert
Sunday, October 10th at 2:00 P.M.

This legendary singer-songwriter has his roots in the Greenwich Village "folk" revival of the 1960's, with classic songs like "Thirsty Boots," "Close The Door Lightly When You Go," "Violets of Dawn" and many more. Andersen's 1972 album (and title song) "Blue River" demonstrated his ability to remain an important part of the contemporary music scene and his recordings in the decades since exemplify the continued growth and vitality of his music.

Having played Stony Brook in 1967 and again in 1972 during the University's concert heyday, and returning for two subsequent Café shows in recent years, it is indeed fitting that Eric Andersen returns on this special weekend to play a show which will revisit many of his classic songs and also introduce some new ones as well. Slaid Cleaves

Slaid Cleaves
Sunday, November 7th at 2 P.M.

Slaid Cleaves' self-penned biography simply says: "Grew up in Maine. Lives in Texas. Writes songs. Makes Records. Travels around. Tries to be good."

From his early years in South Berwick, Maine, where he and Rod Picott were members of a high school garage band, Slaid Cleaves eventually migrated to Austin, Texas, where he became a well-known fixture on the local acoustic music scene and won the New Folk competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1992. His second national solo album, 2000's Broke Down landed Cleaves on the Americana radio charts with both the title track (a co-write with Picott) and "One Good Year." A busy tour schedule, fueled by an engaging stage personality, have won Cleaves a devoted fan base which includes novelist Stephen King, who wrote the liner notes to Cleaves' most recent album, Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away (www.slaidcleaves.com for more information)

James Keelaghan

James Keelaghan
Sunday, November 14th at 2 P.M.

One of Canada's top singer/songwriters, James Keelaghan has gained an international audience during a quarter of a century career of recording and performing. A student of history and a lover of language, Keelaghan has combined both in songs respected by his peers, with Richard Shindell, Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky including Keelaghan's classic "Cold Missouri Waters" on their Cry Cry Cry album.

In addition to that acclaimed song, Keelaghan can point to a deep catalogue of timeless originals like "Kiri's Piano", "Fires of Calais", "Jenny Bryce", "Hillcrest Mine" and many more flowing from his ten albums. He is also a masterful interpreter of the works of others as evidenced by his recording "A Few Simple Verses" which paid homage to his roots in traditional music and his powerful version of Gordon Lightfoot's epic "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" (a standout track on a Lightfoot tribute album.)

Songs from his new album, House of Cards, and Keelaghan classics will be heard during his University Café debut. (www.keelaghan.com for more information)

Ellis Paul

Ellis Paul's annual Thanksgiving weekend concert
Sunday, November 28th at 2 P.M.

Our 100th concert at the Cafe and we can't think of a better way to celebrate this than by having Ellis Paul return for his Thanksgiving weekend concert. Last year's sold-out performance by Ellis and friends was incredible, so we expect another memorable afternoon.

Ellis Paul stands at the very top of the contemporary acoustic music world bridging the gulf between the contemporary folk sound and the populist traditions of Woody Guthrie and others. From his emergence on the Boston folk scene, he has won a devout following for his well-crafted songs and his passionate, energetic stage presentation.

Ellis is also celebrating his 20th year as a performer so you can expect him to revisit many of his older songs during his Café visit as well as showcasing songs from his most recent album, the brilliant The Day After Everything Changed.

An Ellis Paul concert is a special event and we are delighted to have him make the University Cafe home for his yearly visit to Long Island. (www.ellispaul.com)

Advance sale at $22.00 at www.shopsbu.com until Tuesday, November 23rd (PLEASE NOTE EARLY CUT OFF DATE).
Tickets at the door (if available) $27.00

David Francey

David Francey with Craig Werth
Sunday, December 12th at 2 P.M.

Scottish-born Canadian, David Francey is recognized as one of today's finest singer-songwriters who has released eight albums to date. His most recent is Seaway - a collaboration with Mike Ford (of Moxy Fruvous fame) with songs based on their voyage on the M.V. Algoville. Francey's CD, Right of Passage, earned him his third JUNO (Canada's equivalent of a Grammy) in less than 5 years.

Francey got his first taste of the working life as a paper boy and reading the newspapers he delivered helped establish his interest in politics and world events while developing the social conscience that forms the backdrop of his songs. He was twelve when his family immigrated to Toronto. He says he can trace his love of the land, the history, and the people of his adopted country to weekend family drives exploring southern Ontario. His attachment to Canada grew with travel and this attachment surfaces in his songs of rail lines, farms, and the St. Lawrence Seaway.

In concert David is a storyteller as well as a singer. His wry humor and astute observations combined with his openhearted singing style have earned him a loyal following. Touring with David is American ballad maker and multi-instrumentalist Craig Werth. (www.davidfrancey.com for more information)
